Unlike their male counterparts, the Super Eagles who have
been toppled by less fancied African teams in FIFA and CAF rankings, African
women champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, have climbed three places in the
year end Fifa ranking for women.
The
Nigerian women are in the 32nd position in the global ranking compared to the
last quarter that they occupied the 35th position.
Conversely,
the Eagles that were in 42 in November, dropped to 43 in the latest year end
FIFA rankings thus ending the year outside the top 40 teams in the world.
The
Falcons who are World Cup bound, are the top team in Africa followed by Ghana,
Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa in that order.
Nigeria’s
rivals at the Women’s World Cup – United States, Sweden and Australia – are
ranked 2nd, 5th and 10th respectively.
Germany,
USA, France, Japan and Sweden, who will all feature at next year’s tournament
in Canada, are the top five countries in the world.
The next
world ranking will be published by the official website of FIFA, fifa.com, on
27 March 2015.
