President
Goodluck Jonathan has advised the 250 Ebola volunteers not to play heroes but
display professionalism in the field of duty but to explore their skills to
combat the disease.
The President reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to assist Africa and indeed the
world wherever there is need to do so and thus save humanity.
“We have
defeated Ebola in Nigeria, but the war is still very much on as long as there
is a single case anywhere in this world, the world is at risk. And, we must do
whatever is in within our power to ensure that we become our brothers’ keepers.
“Nigeria
is already sharing her experiences as evidenced today by these our gallant
volunteers who are willing to put their lives on the lines for the sake of
their African brothers. This is the professionalism we’d all wanted to see.
This contingent is very equipped, wanting to ensure that they have done their
quota to ensure that we help our brothers to achieve Ebola-free status that we
have achieved.
“My call
on the volunteers is don’t be heroes on the field. Be professionals in whatever
you do out there. We know the dangers inherent in what you are going to do.
Being heroes will not solve the problem. But, if you must solve the problem,
what you have been taught here, you put it in practice; you protect yourselves
and do what you have to do for the people in need of our services.
“The
Federal Government of Nigeria is 100 percent behind you. We have reviewed all
the weights, and the African Union can be guaranteed of the total commitment of
the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure the success of this programme, not
only in Nigeria, but across the globe,” he added.
Another
batch of 250 volunteers leaves in January 2015.
