LearnAfrica rewards NECO best students



Master Nder Sesugh Samuel from Vaatia College, Makurdi , Benue State has emerged overall best candidate in the 2014 NECO examination in Nigeria.

Just as the duo of Adesokan Adediran Sakirudeen and Raji Oluwatobi Quadri who are the first and second best in Lagos State, emerged the overall second and third best students in Nigeria respectively. Adepoju Barakat Aderonke, a student of Chrisland College, Idimu won the third best award in Lagos State.
Of the 111 candidates comprising the three best candidates in each state including the federal capital territory, 50 awardees were female, while 61 were male.


In the breakdown of winners, Makinde Victor, a student of College of Education Demonstration Secondary School, Ikere Ekiti, won the new concept prize for the best score in Mathematics; Abu Ehiozomwangie from Ase-Osa Hope Foundation School, Benin, won the new concept prize for the best score in English; Mary Adamu of Government Girls Day Secondary School, Zamfara State, received Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh prize for the best score in Biology; while Agbaijoh Ikiyouko-Amiyen of Ukhuba-Ama High School, Ajapa, Kogi State won the J.F. Ade-Ajayi prize for the best score in History.

Sakirudeen won a cash prize of N80, 000 and plaque in the national award, with additional cash prize of N40, 000 and a certificate in the state award; Quadri went home with N60, 000 and a plaque in the national award and an additional N30, 000 and certificate in the state award; while Aderonke won a cash prize of N20, 000 and a certificate.

Speaking at the LearnAfrica – NECO Excellence Awards ceremony held at Felix Iwerebon House, Ikeja, Lagos,  Learn Africa Education Development Foundation’s Chairman, Chief Emeke Iwerebon, restated the foundation’s commitment to continue to encourage students and teachers who posted brilliant results in National Examination Council (NECO) examination.

He said: “The award is targeted at students, teachers and schools as a way of encouraging strong commitment to learning and healthy rivalry. It is also appreciate teachers for their dedication to duty, and schools for providing the right atmosphere for effective teaching and learning.”

According to him, the initiative which is the corporate social responsibility arm of LearnAfrica, is targeted at highlighting the importance of education to national development.

Iwerebon who tasked the awardees to be committed to life-long learning said: “Only those who develop the ability to continuously acquire knowledge can become masters of their fate rather than victims of circumstances.”

However, not only did winners receive cash prizes and certificates at the ceremony, the winning schools and teachers received certificates and books for their effort.
