NYSC Launches Pilot Scheme for Nationwide Health Provision for Rural Dwellers
In an effort to complement the effort of government at all levels in the provisions of healthcare facilities to rural areas, the National Youth Service Corps has launched the pilot scheme of a health initiative in Igbo Owu, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara state.
The scheme was designed to mobilise volunteer medical corp members for the provision of healthcare intervention services to the rural dwellers thereby facilitating access to prompt health services.
The programme will ensure the corps members who studied medicine, dentistry, nursing and other related disciplines going to rural area on weekends to offer free health services to the people.
Igbo Owu community came alive when it played host several dignataries including the director general of the NYSC, Brigadier General Johnson Olawunmi.
The health initiative for rural dwellers will also be replicated in other states of the country.
In his address, General Adewunmi stressed that NYSC will collaborate with governments and other stakeholders to spell out modalities for choosing the communities where the programme will soon be launched.
The Kwara State Government represented by the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Saheed Popoola assured the people of government’s readiness to partner with NYSC for the success of the programme, adding that governments cannot do it alone.
Responding on behalf of the community, the Olowu of Igbo Owu, Oba Abdul Rasak expressed belief that the initiative will enhance the provision of health facilities in his domain and called on other stakeholders to emulate NYSC.
