The
Federal Government, weekend, gave Nigeria Prison Service 30 days ultimatum to
withdraw all telephones from inmates and prisons officials in prisons
nationwide.
Minister
of Interior, Abba Moro, gave this ultimatum during an interactive meeting with
senior officers of the Nigerian Prisons Service in Abuja.
The
minister said the order also included indecent dressing by inmates, adding
henceforth, no inmate should be allowed to wear their choice of clothes or
shoes, no matter how highly placed.
He said:
“I have visited some prisons in other countries as the Minister of Nigeria,
nobody, no matter highly placed, you don’t come to prison with your phones, not
even the Minister of Interior or the supervising minister over the prisons. So,
why are you an exception?
“Henceforth,
no matter who you are, including myself, nobody goes into prison with
telephones. And so, there should be a platform where all the officers submit
their phones on arrival at work and collect them when they close.
